Abstract. Studying foreign language is very useful for many reasons and understanding how this type of education was done could offer us many more other insights even important for our history. Apart from classical languages, French was the first and most important foreign language studied in Romania, also in the higher education system. French was studied in 10 higher education centres, in 17 institutions, in different forms of departments. This structure of French language higher education gets even more complicated at the level of specializations, where French was studied as a simple or double specialization, with Romanian and different many other foreign languages to study, depending on the institution of higher education. Among these institutions, University of Bucharest was the most important for studying French language and foreign languages in general (in terms of structure established – specializations, didactical staff, students). This approach, to study the evolution of organizing the French higher education is just a basic start to study the history of this kind of education.
